Fractal Characteristics for Goose Down Assemblies as Porous Media
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper, the fractal characteristics of goose down assembly are described by determining the pore area fractal dimension and the tortuosity fractal dimension. The goose down assembly, filled with mass of down fibers and pores, is loose and ductile. The pores are varying shapes and sizes, and distribute unevenly. Firstly, micro computed tomography is used to observe the internal microstructure of down assembly without destructing the original assembly shape. The derived computed tomography images of down assemblies with various volume fractions are then treated by two-value method. The measurement verifies that the porous structure of down assembly possesses typical fractal characteristic, and the pore area fractal dimensions Df are determined by the box counting method. According to the capillary principle the tortuous flow path in down assembly is simulated, and the fractal dimension of the tortuous flow path DT is also calculated by the same way. The results indicate that the pore area fractal dimensions decrease and the tortuosity fractal dimensions increase gradually as the volume fractions Vf of the assembly increase.

Fractal Geometry and Porosity
A fractal is an object or a structure that is self-similar in all length scales. Fractal geometry is an excellent mathematical tool used in the study of irregular geometric objects. The concept of the fractal dimension, D, as a measure of complexity is defined. The concept of fractal geometry is closely linked to scale invariance, and it provides a framework for the analysis of natural phenomen...
متن کاملDigital core and pore network model reconstruction based on random fractal theory
Microscopic structures of porous media are mainly reconstructed using physical experimental methods and numerical reconstruction methods. However, their accuracy is closely related to the resolution of real rock core images and polishing techniques of core chips amongst others, which significantly limit the development of micro-network flow simulation. In this paper, we proposed a new method fo...
متن کاملFractal generation of surface area of porous media
Many natural porous geological rock formations, as well as engineered porous structures, have fractal properties, i.e., they are self-similar over several length scales. While there have been many experimental and theoretical studies on how to quantify a fractal porous medium and on how to determine its fractal dimension, the numerical generation of a fractal pore structure with prede®ned stati...
متن کاملSPE 89429 Theoretical Development of the Brooks-Corey Capillary Pressure Model from Fractal Modeling of Porous Media
The capillary pressure model proposed empirically by Brooks and Corey has been used widely for several decades. However it is not clear why the Brooks-Corey capillary pressure model works so well. In this study, it has been found that the empirical Brooks-Corey capillary pressure model can be derived theoretically from fractal modeling of porous media. Also found was the correlation between the...
متن کاملHeat Transfer Characteristics of Porous Radiant Burners Using Discrete-Ordinate Method (S2-Approximation)
This paper describes a theoretical study to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of porous radiant burners. A one dimensional model is used to solve the governing equations for porous medium and gas flow before the premixed flame to the exhaust gas. Combustion in the porous medium is modeled as a spatially dependent heat generation zone. The homogeneous porous media, in addition to its...
